If my Car Windshield has a crack, do I need to replace it or get it repaired?

Were you driving on I-20 (or any of the crazy highways in Georgia) and a rock fell off a truck and cracked your windshield?

Sometimes the crack might not seem like much but it can be very dangerous and in some cases illegal to drive with a cracked windshield. Whether you need to replace your windshield with a crack depends on the size and location of the crack; generally, small cracks can be repaired, while large cracks or those extending across the windshield likely require replacement, especially if they are in your line of sight or near the edge of the glass.

Key factors to consider for replacement:

  • Crack size: Cracks larger than a dollar bill usually need replacing.
  • Crack depth: If the crack extends more than halfway through the windshield thickness, it likely needs replacement.
  • Crack location: Cracks in the driver's line of sight or close to the edge of the windshield often require replacement.

When to get a repair instead of replacement:

  • Small chips: Chips smaller than a quarter can usually be repaired.
  • Minor cracks: Short cracks that are not spreading may be repairable.
